China calls for free and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz

China has called for free and safe international navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

In a phone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that efforts to restore normal transit through the Strait were a common call across the international community.

At the same time, Yi reaffirmed China's position that Iran's sovereignty, security and rights as a coastal state of the Strait of Hormuz must be respected and protected.

Trump said in a statement the day before that he would reopen the Strait of Hormuz to China. China buys more than 80% of the oil shipped from Iran, according to 2025 data from the analytical firm Kpler.

The analysis also showed that China bought an average of 1.38 million barrels per day of Iranian oil last year. /CNA
