Russian missiles hit Kiev and other Ukrainian cities / Several casualties reported

Russia has been shelling Kiev and other Ukrainian cities with missiles and drones overnight. As a result, 13 people have been killed, including a 12-year-old child, dozens have been injured and buildings have been severely damaged.

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said four people, including the minor, had died in the Ukrainian capital. 

Videos released by Reuters show flames and smoke rising into the sky, as firefighters battled for hours to bring the flames under control overnight.

The attacks come after a brief ceasefire reached during Orthodox Easter celebrations at the weekend, during which both sides accused each other of hundreds of violations. The war in Ukraine is now in its fifth year and there have been several rounds of peace talks, with the US acting as a mediator.

What Ukraine has repeatedly proposed is a complete and lasting ceasefire as a first step toward negotiations for a lasting end to the Russian occupation. But Moscow insists that a peace agreement be reached first, prompting accusations from Kiev that Russia is not serious about ending the fighting. /CNA
