Japan introduces new term for days with temperatures above 40°C after record

The Japan Meteorological Agency has introduced a new term to describe days with extreme temperatures above 40°C, following a historically hot summer that hit the country last year. The new term, “kokushobi,” translates as “brutally hot” or “brutally hot,” and was voted the most popular in a national online poll.

The survey, conducted in February and March, included about 478,000 participants, who chose from 13 alternatives to name days with extreme heat. The winning term aims to better reflect the increasing intensity of temperatures, which are becoming increasingly common due to climate change.

Japan already uses different classifications for hot days, including those above 25°C, 30°C and 35°C. However, rising temperatures have necessitated a new category for even higher heat levels.

The summer of 2025 was recorded as the hottest since records began in 1898, with average temperatures 2.36°C above normal. During this period, temperatures exceeded 40°C for nine days, while a new national record of 41.8°C was also set in the city of Isesaki.

Major cities such as Tokyo and Kyoto also experienced a significant increase in days with temperatures above 35°C, significantly exceeding historical averages. For next summer, meteorological authorities warn that there is a high probability that temperatures will remain above normal from June to August.

Experts point out that heat waves are becoming more frequent and intense globally, mainly due to human activity and the use of fossil fuels./ CNA
