Attack on CEC offices/ Accused sentenced to 12 years in prison

The Basic Court in Pristina has found Milun Millenkovic - Llunen, Aleksandar Vllajic and Dejan Pantic guilty of the attack on the offices of the Municipal Election Commission in North Mitrovica in December 2022.

Millenkovic-Llune and Vllajic were sentenced to five years in prison each, while Pantic was sentenced to two years in prison.

Miomir Vaki? was acquitted of the charges because it was not proven that he committed a criminal offense.

The Kosovo Prosecution Office had filed an indictment against these four individuals in December 2023 for the criminal offense of "terrorist act".

They were accused of having attacked the CEC offices with hand grenades and explosive devices, with the aim – as stated in the indictment – of “destabilizing or destroying the political and constitutional structures of the Republic of Kosovo.” According to the prosecution, the lives of CEC officials and members of the Kosovo Police were seriously endangered by this attack.

Millenkovic and Vllajic will also be given time served in pre-trial detention.

Pantic and Vakic were defended at liberty. At the first hearing, held at the end of January 2024, all defendants pleaded not guilty.

None of the defendants were in the courtroom on Monday. They have the right to appeal the decision.

Predrag Milkovic, Milun Millenkovic's lawyer, has called the verdict against his client "catastrophic" and has warned that he will appeal.

"We have fundamental procedural violations, due to witnesses who were unexpectedly proposed during the trial and questioned at that stage. The prosecution was aware of them at the time of the indictment, but it seems to have knowingly hidden them from the defense during the investigative phase, just to introduce a 'hidden trick' into the process," he told reporters.

The Kosovo Special Prosecution Office has said that it welcomes the decision made in court.

"This decision is an important step towards establishing justice and sends a message that acts of violence and threats against the democratic institutions of the Republic of Kosovo will not be tolerated," the Prosecution said in a reaction on social media./ Rel
