European leaders welcome US-EU trade deal

A trade agreement has been reached between the European Union and the US after negotiations.

The deal will include a 15% overall tariff from the US on all EU goods. The details of the agreement are still being worked out, but as part of it, Trump also said the EU had promised hundreds of billions of dollars in investment and energy purchases.

The US leader described the agreement as "the greatest ever achieved"; while Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the deal, saying it would bring stability and predictability to both sides.

In the hours following the announcement, European leaders cautiously welcomed the trade deal with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz saying the agreement succeeded in safeguarding the EU's fundamental interests.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni sees the deal as positive but says she will need to see the details before making a proper judgement. Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin says it will help bring stability, but he admits trade will be more expensive than before./ CNA, translated by BBC
