Knife attack near school / Violent protests in Dublin

Protesters clashed with police, burned cars and looted shops in Dublin after three children were injured in a knife attack near a school.

Armed with protest gear, police guarded the streets of the Irish capital as crowds cheered and set off fireworks.

Near O'Connell Bridge, over the River Liffey, fire broke out from a car and a burning bus as mobs broke into shops and ransacked one of the city's main shopping streets.

The riots, which are being considered the worst in Dublin in years, came after a five-year-old girl was seriously injured in a suspected stabbing in Parnell East Square in north central Dublin.

Two other children and two adults, including a woman and the suspect in the attack, were taken to the hospital after the incident, around 1:30 p.m.

Police described the attacker as a man in his fifties, while backlash on social media about his nationality fueled unrest after the attack.

Police chief Drew Harris blamed a "crazy group driven by far-right ideology" and warned against "disinformation".

Some protesters carried placards reading: "Irish Lives Matter" as Irish flags waved across a neighborhood home to a large immigrant community./ REL
