Viktor Orban's defeat in the elections / The first reaction from the

The Kremlin has reacted for the first time to the defeat of Russia's longtime ally Viktor Orban in Sunday's parliamentary elections, saying Moscow expects to maintain its relations with Hungary.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the Hungarian people had made their choice and that Russia respected the decision.

Peskov added that Russia will wait to see what the government of Peter Magyar will do after declaring victory, adding that the Kremlin does not believe the elections will affect the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He said Russia wants to build good relations with Hungary and other European countries.

Viktor Orban's government had blocked a €90 billion interest-free loan to Ukraine as it continued to try to contain Moscow's invasion. Hungary has also continued to buy gas and oil from Russia despite Moscow's war with its neighbor.

Orban was considered the closest European leader to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who launched what he called a "special military operation" against Kiev in 2022. So far, there has been no direct reaction from Putin. /CNA
