Researchers warn: Population is exceeding Earth's limits

A new scientific study warns that rapid population growth and high levels of consumption are pushing the Earth beyond its sustainable limits. According to research led by Corey Bradshaw of Flinders University in Australia, humanity is living beyond the capacity the planet can sustain in the long term.

The scientists used data spanning more than two centuries to analyze changes in population growth. They focused on the concept of "carrying capacity," which defines the maximum number of individuals an environment can sustainably support, based on natural resources and their regeneration.

According to the study, the current global population of about 8.3 billion is well above the optimal level of sustainability, which is estimated at about 2.5 billion people. Meanwhile, the absolute maximum limit of carrying capacity could reach up to about 12 billion, a level predicted to be reached in the 2060s–2070s if current trends continue.

The study highlights that the use of fossil fuels has artificially increased the Earth's carrying capacity, enabling rapid population growth during the 20th century. However, this has brought major consequences, including climate change, resource depletion and pressure on ecosystems.

Experts warn that natural life-support systems are already under great stress. Without rapid changes in the way we use energy, land and food resources, billions of people could face increasing insecurity and hardship.

However, the researchers stress that there is still time to act. They call for profound changes in socio-economic practices and international cooperation to achieve a more sustainable future for humanity and the planet./ CNA
