BBC Analysis: Islamabad meeting fails, Vance returns to US empty-handed

After talks that lasted from early afternoon until the early hours of the morning, JD Vance said the US delegation would return home without a deal, following the failed Iran-US talks in Pakistan. The US vice president said he had spoken to US President Donald Trump several times during the talks.

He said his team had failed to convince Iran to confirm that it would not seek nuclear weapons or the means that would allow it to quickly achieve one, and described this as President Trump's main goal, as he expressed his disappointment.

Iran has always said it has no plans to develop nuclear weapons. There has been no official response from the Iranian delegation, but state media reported that the talks collapsed due to unreasonable US demands. The US vice president left to return to the US empty-handed.

In his public comments, Vance did not mention the Strait of Hormuz, the main oil route that the US wants Iran to open and which has been widely cited as a major sticking point in the talks.

Pakistan's foreign minister said it was imperative that both sides continue to adhere to the ceasefire agreed upon before their arrival in Islamabad, although both sides have accused each other of violating the agreement.
