Attack at Grand Central in New York/ The perpetrator injured 3 people

A machete-wielding suspect randomly attacked three people at New York City's Grand Central Station before being shot dead by police, in an attack that diverted trains at the nation's largest rail hub.

The suspect stabbed an 84-year-old man and a 65-year-old man in the head and face with a machete, and left a 70-year-old woman with a cut on her shoulder during the attack on the subway platform.

Police said the shooter, 44-year-old Anthony Griffin, ignored repeated requests to drop the weapon and called himself Lucifer.

Authorities said no terrorism connection is suspected in this incident.

He boarded the No. 7 train to Grand Central-42nd Street station, where he stabbed a person on the platform with a machete. The attacker went up to another platform where he stabbed two more people.

One was an 84-year-old man who suffered serious head and facial injuries, and the other was a 65-year-old man who suffered similar injuries, as well as an open skull fracture, Commissioner Tisch said.

"The individual was armed with a large knife, described as a machete, and was behaving erratically, repeatedly declaring that he was Lucifer," Tisch said.

She said the attacker had ignored at least 20 requests to drop the weapon and approached the officers with the knife outstretched.

An officer fired his gun, hitting the suspect twice, before they attempted life-saving measures. But the suspect was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital.

All three injured were taken to the hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. The New York Police Department urged residents to avoid the area due to the investigation.
