He started his career in Orban's party/ Who is the new Prime Minister of

Peter Magyar is the new prime minister of Hungary, who won the most important elections of the post-war period and ended many years of Viktor Orban's rule.

The 45-year-old lawyer and MEP has emerged as a central political figure in a short time, capitalizing on the discontent of a significant part of society.

Peter Magyar comes from Viktor Orban's ruling Fidesz party, which has given him a deep understanding of how power works in Hungary. A lawyer by profession, he was a close associate of the state government, before distancing himself and pursuing an independent political path, which eventually led him to become prime minister.

In 2020, he founded the Tisza party, and in 2024 he was elected as an MEP with the European People's Party political group.

Although his party is considered more pro-European than Orban's Fidesz, he has chosen a cautious political stance towards the European Union, avoiding positions that could be considered unpopular domestically.

The scandal that made him famous

His rise to the political spotlight is linked to the events of 2023, when he made public accusations against the Orban government over corruption issues.

Magyar secretly recorded a conversation with his then-wife and Justice Minister Judith Varga, in which he discussed alleged government interference in a corruption case. The case sparked strong political backlash and contributed to his political rise.

His ex-wife accused him of domestic violence and blackmail, claiming she did not know he was being recorded. These accusations sparked intense controversy, but did not stop his momentum in public opinion.

His political agenda

Despite his election to the European Parliament, Magyar has avoided full identification with Brussels’ political choices, trying to balance between his European orientation and the reluctance of a significant part of Hungarian voters towards the EU.

Issues such as Ukraine’s possible membership in the European Union or economic aid to Kiev are sensitive political issues at home, which limits the space for differentiation from the positions that have been formed in recent years in the Hungarian political system.

Viktor Orban has repeatedly called Hungary a “puppet of Brussels,” an accusation that the new prime minister rejects, seeking to present himself as a politician who can combine a European course with the protection of national interests.

His election marks a significant political shift for Hungary, ending a long period of Orban’s dominance and opening a new chapter for the country on the European and international stage. /CNA
