Tragedy in a tourist area/ At least 30 killed in northern Haiti

At least 30 people were killed in a stampede at a popular tourist attraction in northern Haiti.

Foreign media write that the tragedy occurred at the Citadelle Laferrière, an early 19th-century fortress built shortly after Haiti gained independence from France. A large number of visitors had gathered at the fort, in the northern commune of Millau.

Authorities called on citizens to remain calm while an investigation has been launched into the tragedy.

Haiti has suffered severe blows from various disasters, including explosions in fuel tanks in 2024 and 2021, killing 24 and 90 people, respectively, as well as a powerful earthquake in 2021 with over 2,000 deaths and extensive material damage. /CNA
