After the failure of US-Iran peace negotiations, Pakistan calls for respect for the ceasefire. But is there any possibility of continuing US-Iraq talks?
After the temporary failure of negotiations between the US and Iran, Pakistan, which was the mediator in the talks, called on both countries to continue to respect the ceasefire they have agreed to. This is "absolutely necessary," said Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
Pakistan will continue to serve as a mediator to facilitate "dialogue" between Washington and Tehran, Dar said, also thanking the US and Iran for recognizing Pakistan's efforts to end the war.
Is there any possibility of continuing peace talks?
It seems that both sides are in principle ready for further negotiations. Vance's statement that they are leaving an offer on the table is quite vague, but it does not sound like an immediate end to the negotiations, which may continue behind the scenes. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Baghai also did not rule out further negotiations and stressed that diplomacy never ends.
Even statements by US President Trump suggest further negotiations: "I expect them to come back and give us everything we want," he told Fox News.
Peter Neumann, a security expert at King's College in London, does not see the negotiations as a complete failure. However, he says it is not enough for one side to dictate terms to the other. If the Americans want to achieve the opening of the Strait of Hormuz and a lasting solution to the nuclear program, they must make concessions to the Iranians on several issues, Neumann said.
"It is clear: the US has put itself in a strategic disadvantage with this war." But the losers, according to expert Neumann, are also the Iranian democrats.
Why did the talks fail?
The US delegation, led by Vice President JD Vance, said the negotiations failed because of what they considered Iran's refusal to give up its nuclear program.
"We need to see a clear commitment that they will not seek nuclear weapons and will not seek the means that would enable them to quickly create such a weapon," Vance said.
But Ghalibaf insisted that Iran "will not stop for a moment its efforts to consolidate the achievements of the forty days of national defense," adding: "The US has understood Iran's logic and principles, and now it is time for them to decide whether they can earn our trust or not."/ DW
