US blockade of Iranian ports/ UK will not participate

The United Kingdom will not participate in the implementation of the US military blockade of Iranian ports.

British ships and naval personnel will not be used to blockade Iranian ports, but UK minesweepers and anti-drone capabilities will continue to operate in the region.

"We continue to support freedom of navigation and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, which is urgently needed to support the global economy and the cost of living at home," a government spokesman told the BBC.

US President Donald Trump said a US blockade of Iranian ports would begin today at 10:00 a.m. Eastern time, while US Central Command said the blockade would not impede ships sailing through the Strait of Hormuz.

The development comes after weekend peace talks between the US and Iran ended without a deal. Trump said they failed because Iran would not give up its nuclear ambitions, while the Iranian foreign minister blamed the US.

In response to the blockade announced by Trump, the speaker of Iran's parliament said the country will not surrender to threats and Iran's Revolutionary Guard says any military ship approaching the Strait of Hormuz will "face a severe response." /CNA
