Macron: France and Britain will start talks on reopening the Strait of Hormuz

France and the UK will hold talks aimed at restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

This is what French President Emmanuel Macron declared today on "X", adding that this would be a "strictly defensive" mission.

“No effort should be spared to achieve a rapid, solid and lasting solution to the conflict in the Middle East through diplomatic means. Such a solution must provide the region with a solid framework that enables all to live in peace and security. To this end, all essential issues must be addressed through lasting solutions, whether in relation to Iran’s nuclear and ballistic activities, its destabilizing actions in the region, the need to restore free and unimpeded navigation through the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible, and the need to ensure that Lebanon returns to the path of peace in full respect of its sovereignty and territorial integrity. France is ready to play its full role, as it has consistently tried to do since the first day of the conflict. As for the Strait of Hormuz, in the coming days, together with the United Kingdom, we will organize a conference with those countries prepared to contribute alongside us to a multinational peacekeeping mission "aimed at restoring freedom of navigation in the strait. This strictly defensive mission, separate from the warring parties in the conflict, is intended to be deployed as soon as circumstances allow ," Macron's post said.

A British government spokesman told CNN that London is trying to put together a broad coalition with France and others to secure passage through the waterway, adding that it "should not be subject to taxation."

Calling the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz deeply damaging, Starmer said that this week, the UK and France "will jointly host a summit to take forward work on a coordinated, independent and multinational plan to protect international shipping when the conflict ends." /CNA
