IMF: EU measures towards Kosovo, negative impact on the economy

The International Monetary Fund has stated that the measures taken by the European Union for Kosovo have a negative impact on the absorption of foreign investments.

"In particular, recent developments in the four northern municipalities led to temporary and reversible measures by some donors and traditional partners that limit new economic and financial cooperation. While these measures are not expected to affect the outlook if they return in the short term, they may become an obstacle to foreign direct investment and economic development in general if they remain for a longer time," a report said.

Gabriel Di Bella, the deputy head of the division in the Developing Economies Unit of the European Department of the IMF, along with a team from this institution, stayed in Kosovo from July 31 to August 4 to discuss macroeconomic issues and others, including progress in the implementation of agreements.

At the end of his visit, Di Bella stated that macroeconomic conditions in Kosovo have remained favorable.

He emphasized that inflation continues to fall in Kosovo and fiscal revenues are increasing.

"Amid a challenging global context, macroeconomic conditions in Kosovo have remained favorable so far in 2023. Growth remains resilient, inflation continues to decline and the current account deficit has begun to narrow. Fiscal revenues continue to grow at healthy rates, implementation of the public investment program has increased and fiscal buffers have remained at appropriate levels. However, the instability and raised global tensions in northern Kosovo remain risks for the perspective that, if they materialize, could add to the challenges of policies", Di Bella stated./ CNA
