The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has said that only "the almighty God" can convince him to give up trying to be re-elected.

Biden made the comments Friday in an interview with ABC News in an attempt to dispel doubts and concerns among Democrats about his race in the Nov. 5 election.

He again described as "a bad episode" his poor performance in the presidential debate against his Republican rival, Donald Trump, on June 27 on CNN.

"There are no indications of any serious illness. I was overwhelmed. "I didn't listen to my instincts about the preparations ... it was a bad night," Biden, 81, said.

"I just had a bad night. I don't know why," Biden added.

Biden was gently but repeatedly asked by moderator George Stephanopoulos if he was realistic in his belief that he could beat Trump, given the polls between them and growing concerns from Democrats.

"I think no one else is more qualified," Biden said.

The polls, according to him, are not accurate.

Asked if he would step down if any of the Democrats in Congress said he was hurting his chances of re-election in November, Biden said: "If God Almighty comes and asks me to do it, then I can do it."

The president answered questions more clearly than in the debate against Trump last week, but his voice still sounded weak and occasionally hoarse.

Earlier this week, a poll found that one in three Democrats think Biden should end his re-election bid after last week's debate with Republican challenger Donald Trump.

The two-day poll that closed Tuesday found that Trump, 78, and Biden, 81, maintain the support of 40% of registered voters.

About 32% of Democrats in the poll said Biden should drop out of the re-election race after the June 27 debate.

In that debate, Biden stuttered throughout and failed to challenge Trump's attacks, which, in many cases, included false claims.

Biden himself has admitted that he did not perform well during the debate with Trump, but said that his re-election "would destroy democracy". /REL
