Israeli forces and the Lebanon-based Hebzollah militant group carried out mutual airstrikes along the border on Thursday, the latest attacks in months that have fueled concern that the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza could turn into a wider regional conflict. .

The Hezbollah group said it fired more than 200 rockets at Israeli air bases. Hezbollah's attack prompted Israeli authorities to release air raid sirens in the southern part of the country.

The Israeli military said it had intercepted a large number of rockets and carried out airstrikes on combat positions in Lebanon.

The exchange of fire comes as Israeli officials said they were considering Hamas's response to the latest version of a cease-fire proposal that would include the release of all hostages in Gaza.

Prime Minister Netanyahu's office said Thursday that Israel was carefully considering "several ideas" that Hamas had sent to Qatari mediators.

Mediators from Qatar, Egypt and the United States have been working for months to reach a ceasefire agreement that would allow the hostages to be released and the fighting to cease. The suggestions that Hamas announced on Wednesday included the three-phase deal that President Joe Biden made public in May.

On the other hand, the United Nations expressed deep concern about the Israeli order to evacuate a large part of southern Gaza, which according to the UN, affects tens of thousands of civilians.

The UN's Palestinian refugee agency (UNRWA) estimates that some 250,000 people were sheltering in those areas at the time the evacuation order was issued.

The Israel-Hamas war erupted after the militant group's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel killed about 1,200 people and took more than 250 hostages, according to Israeli data.

As a result of the Israeli response, about 38,000 people have been killed so far according to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, which is controlled by Hamas, and whole parts of this territory have been destroyed./ VOA
