NATO member countries decided to send a special emissary to Kiev to expand the civilian presence of the Western military alliance in Ukraine, a spokesman for the DPA news agency confirmed.

The senior official will be tasked with coordinating the alliance's political and practical support on the ground as Ukraine continues to fight against the Russian occupation.

The news comes before the NATO summit in Washington, which will be held from July 9 to 11.

At that summit, leaders are expected to formally approve a plan to coordinate military aid to Ukraine, for the first time under an official mission called NATO Security and Training Assistance.

For now, it is unclear who will be appointed to the new post in Kiev. Further details will be revealed after the official selection, the spokesman said, confirming plans previously reported by the Wall Street Journal.

NATO, on the other hand, has had official representation in Kyiv for nearly a decade, including a liaison office and an information and documentation center that has existed since the late 1990s.

He handles, among other things, contacts with Ukrainian ministries and authorities./ REL
