Israel attacks the city of Khan Younis, at least 8 people are killed

At least eight Palestinians were killed during Israeli airstrikes on the city of Khan Younis, officials from the Hamas-controlled health ministry said.

The city in the southern Gaza Strip was bombed a day after Israel ordered the evacuation of Palestinian civilians.

On Tuesday, the Israeli military announced that overnight airstrikes were concentrated in an area of ??Khan Younis, where militants had fired 20 rockets at Israeli settlements.

Other airstrikes targeted the southern city of Rafah, while Israeli ground troops carried out operations against Hamas in central Gaza.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, told reporters on Monday that the Israeli evacuation order from Khan Younis shows "that there is no longer any safe place in Gaza and that more efforts must be made to protect civilians".

Israel has repeatedly called on Palestinians to leave parts of Gaza, usually before launching any attacks, as part of efforts that Israel says are aimed at protecting civilians.

The Israel-Hamas war erupted after the militant group's October 7, 2023 attack on the Jewish state killed around 1,200 people and took more than 250 hostages.

As a result of the Israeli response, about 38,000 people have been killed so far, according to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, and whole parts of the territory have been turned into ruins./ VOA
