Steve Bannon, one of former President Donald Trump's top allies, will appear in prison on Monday to serve a four-month sentence on charges of violating an order to testify before a House committee investigating the attack. to the Capitol.

Mr. Bannon is expected to serve his sentence at a low-security federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut, according to a person familiar with the matter. He is expected to remain in prison almost until election day.

On Friday, the Supreme Court rejected a request by Mr. Bannon to delay the start of his prison sentence pending the completion of the appeals process.

In 2022, Mr. Bannon was sentenced to four months in prison on two counts of disobedience to Congress. He was accused of refusing to hand over documents or testify before the Democratic-led House of Representatives committee investigating the Capitol riots caused by former President Trump's supporters. The latter tried to prevent the certification of the result of the 2020 election, which declared Mr. Biden the winner.

Mr. Bannon was a key adviser to Mr. Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. He then served as one of his top advisers in the White House in 2017, but left after a falling out between them, a relationship that improved over late.

Steve Bannon is not the first former senior Trump administration official to go to prison for refusing to cooperate with a House committee.

Peter Navarro, a former trade adviser to the former president, was jailed in March and sentenced to four months in prison. The Supreme Court also rejected Mr. Navarro's request to delay the start of his sentence pending the conclusion of the appeals process.

In 2021, Mr. Trump pardoned Mr. Bannon, who at the time was on trial on federal charges that, through a fraud scheme, he had collected funds from supporters of the former president, promising that they would be used to build the wall in border with Mexico.

Mr. Bannon has denied the allegations. Meanwhile, he is awaiting trial for the same case, under charges filed at the state level./ VOA
