More than 300 people have been hospitalized due to norovirus infection (a highly contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea) in Lake Garda in northern Italy.

The people are suspected to have been infected by the city's water supply, authorities said.

More than 900 cases of norovirus infection have been registered in the municipality of Tori del Benaco on the eastern shore of the lake, which is a popular tourist destination, RAI reported.

Those infected have symptoms such as diarrhea, cramps and fever.

In that municipality, water is distributed free of charge and residents were urged to buy bottled water.

Italian newspapers reported that the outbreak of the viral infection was linked to an increase in the level of the lake after heavy rains in recent weeks, which led to an overload of the sewage system or food preparation.

Norovirus is highly contagious, but it is usually short-lived, with symptoms disappearing after half a day to two days.

The virus can be transmitted not only through contaminated water, but also through food. Noroviruses are a group of viruses that cause the stomach flu or gastroenteritis./ CNA
