Eighteen prisoners escape from prison in Kashmir

Eighteen prisoners, including some on death row, have escaped from a prison in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir, Pakistani officials announced on July 1.

Local police chief Riaz Mughal said one of the inmates was killed after being shot while escaping from Rawalakot prison a day earlier.

The head of the prison and several other officers have been dismissed.

Mughal said six of the prisoners were on death row, while three others were serving life sentences.

Such jailbreaks are rare in Pakistan, he said.

Officials say one of the inmates was armed with a revolver, which was used to subdue a guard and snatch keys to open the cells./ REL
