The Israeli military has ordered Palestinians to evacuate in large numbers from most of the Gaza Strip's second-largest city, Khan Yunis.

Monday's order is a sign that Israeli troops are likely to launch a new offensive in southern Gaza City.

Israel ended its occupation of Khan Younis earlier this year and withdrew most of its forces from there.

The evacuation order hints that Hamas - the terrorist group designated by the United States and the European Union - may have regrouped in the area.

Israel has said it is ending its offensive in the nearby town of Rafah. Meanwhile, in Gaza City in the north, heavy fighting has been reported in recent weeks.

Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, said that Israel's decision "shows again that there is no safe place in Gaza" and that "more efforts are needed to protect civilians".

Since launching the ground war in Gaza, Israeli forces have moved steadily south into Palestinian territory, aiming to destroy Hamas battalions, although fighting has resumed in the north.

Israel and Hamas appear to be agreeing less and less on how a potential ceasefire deal should be implemented.

The Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, has said that he is willing to accept only a "partial" ceasefire agreement, which would not end the war in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas insists it will not release the remaining hostages unless there is a permanent ceasefire and a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.

Israel launched the war in Gaza in response to an attack by Hamas in southern Israel on October 7 that killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapped around 250 others.

Israel says more than 100 hostages are still being held in Gaza, along with the bodies of around 30 others.

Since then, the Israeli war in Gaza has killed more than 37,000 Palestinians, half of them children and women, according to Palestinian health officials./ REL
