Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that the country's military is nearing the "end of the elimination phase" of the Hamas army in Gaza.

"Yesterday I returned from a visit to the Gaza Division. I saw very significant gains in the fighting going on in Rafah. We are progressing towards the end of the phase of eliminating the terrorist army of Hamas. We will continue to strike at its remnants," Netanyahu said, speaking to a group of mostly Israeli and international military officials. 

He vowed again that Israel will achieve its goals in fighting Hamas, returning hostages from Gaza, eliminating Hamas' military and governance capabilities, ensuring that Gaza does not pose a threat to Israel. 

Before the start of a military operation in Rafah in May, Israeli leaders had claimed that the southern Gaza city was Hamas' last stronghold, CNN reports.

"This does not mean that the war will end, but the war in its current phase will end in Rafah. This is true. We will continue mowing the grass afterwards," Netanyahu told Channel 14 Television on June 23.

Israel launched its military offensive in Gaza following the October 7 attacks led by Hamas in southern Israel that killed at least 1,200 people and kidnapped more than 250 others.

Israeli attacks on Gaza have killed at least 37,718 Palestinians and injured 86,377 others, according to Gaza health officials. /CNA
