Poll: One in three Democrats think Biden should drop out

One in three Democrats think US President Joe Biden should end his re-election bid after last week's debate with Republican challenger Donald Trump, but almost no other Democrat performs better than Biden in a hypothetical confrontation with Trump, according to a poll by the news agency Reuters and the research company Ipsos.

The two-day poll that closed Tuesday found that Trump, 78, and Biden, 81, maintain the support of 40% of registered voters.

Election day is November 5.

Among the names of the main Democrats put before the respondents, only Michelle Obama, the wife of the former Democratic president, Barack Obama, surpassed Biden and came out ahead with 50% support, against Trump with 39%.

Vice President Camala Harris, for example, received 42% support, compared to Trump's 43%.

Michelle Obama, author of the best-selling book in 2018 "Becoming", has repeatedly said that she will not run for president.

About 32% of Democrats in the poll said Biden should drop out of the re-election race after the June 27 debate.

In that debate, Biden stuttered throughout and failed to challenge Trump's attacks, which, in many cases, included false claims.

Biden himself has admitted that he did not perform well during the debate with Trump, but said that his re-election "would destroy democracy".
