A senior Hezbollah commander was killed Wednesday by an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon, as tensions between the two sides continue to rise, a Hezbollah official told The Associated Press.

The attack took place near the coastal city of Tyre, despite global efforts stepping up in recent weeks to prevent an escalation of fighting between Hezbollah and the Israeli army.

There are fears that intermittent fighting between them could explode into a full-scale regional war and could lead to a direct confrontation between Israel and Iran.

Hezbollah identified the slain commander as Mohammad Naamheh Nasser, who was known by the guerilla nickname "Abu Naameh".

A Hezbollah official said on condition of anonymity that he was the head of the Aziz Unit, one of three regional divisions in southern Lebanon.

Naameh is the most senior official of the Iran-backed group to be killed by Taleb Sami Abdullah, who was killed in an airstrike on June 11.

The Israeli army has not yet commented on Wednesday's attack.

Hezbollah launched rocket attacks in northern Israel a day after Hamas launched a surprise attack in southern Israel on October 7, prompting limited fighting along the tense border.

But since then, attacks have slowly escalated, with Hezbollah deploying new weapons to carry out attacks and Israel striking deeper into Lebanon.

Hezbollah insists it will not stop attacks until a ceasefire agreement is reached in the Gaza Strip.

Israeli officials have threatened to carry out a larger military operation if Hezbollah does not stop the attacks.

Allies, including thousands of members of Iran-backed militias in Iraq, have said they will join Hezbollah on the front lines.

More than 450 people have been killed by Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon since October, most of them Hezbollah fighters, but also including more than 80 civilians and non-combatants.

On the Israeli side, 16 soldiers and 11 civilians have been killed since the war in Gaza began. Tens of thousands of people from both sides of the tense border have been displaced as a result of the fighting./ REL
