France's far-right National Rally party is expected to fall short of an absolute majority in the second round of parliamentary elections on Sunday, July 7. That's according to a poll published on Thursday, which suggests the work of traditional parties is working to prevent the far right from winning an absolute majority.

This is the second poll published in as many days that suggests Marine Le Pen's National Rally will win more parliamentary seats than any other party, but will fall short of the 289 seats needed for an absolute majority.

The poll results suggest that the decision of the "republican front", from which more than 200 candidates across the political spectrum withdrew from the second round of voting to make way for whoever is most likely to defeat the National Rally in their circles, is giving results.

The IFOP poll conducted for LCI and Le Figaro said the National Rally will win between 210 and 240 seats, down from the 240-270 it was expected to win, before more than 200 candidates withdrew.

The New Popular Front, left, is expected to come in second place with 170 to 200 seats, while the centrist group of President Emmanuel Macron is expected to come in third place, which is expected to win 95 to 125 seats. Republicans, meanwhile, are projected to win 25 to 45 seats in the 577-seat National Assembly.

A day earlier, the Harris Interactive poll predicted the National Rally would win 190 to 220 seats.

The National Rally Party has said that it will not lead the new Government if it does not win an absolute majority.

Le Pen and the head of the party, Jordan Bardella, have also repeatedly criticized the "republican front", saying that it is despising its voters./ REL
