Russia sentences an American citizen to 12 and a half years in prison

A Russian court has sentenced the American citizen, Robert Woodland, to 12 and a half years in prison after finding him guilty of drug trafficking.

This is what his lawyer, Stanislav Kshevitsky, told the Reuters news agency on July 4.

Woodland, born in Russia, was adopted as a child by American parents. He was arrested by Russian police in January on drug possession charges.

At the time of his arrest, Woodland was reportedly working in the suburbs of Moscow as an English teacher.

In court documents he is identified by the Russian surname Romanov, but it is not clear whether he has Russian citizenship. The news agency, Interfax, said he is a Russian national.

More than ten American citizens are being held in Russian prisons, accused or convicted of various charges, ranging from drug possession, theft, treason and espionage./ REL
