Road accidents are the leading cause of death in the world for 5-29 year olds. That is why the UN has now launched the #MakeASafetyStatement campaign, which aims to increase road safety and halve this figure by 2030.

"Road safety is never sufficiently included in the political agenda in most countries. We know the consequences of accidents, but in relation to the actions taken for prevention, we are far behind" - said Jean Todt, the Special Envoy of the United Nations United for road safety.

He pointed out that every year 1.2 million people die from road accidents and 40 to 50 million others are injured, many of them in serious condition.

Endorsed by many celebrities

The campaign started in New York and will continue until 2025, covering more than 1000 cities in 80 countries of the world, through street advertising, social media and other platforms.

So far, 14 celebrities have been involved in this campaign, including supermodel Naomi Campbell, tennis legend Novak Djokovic, or Oscar-winning actress and UNDP goodwill ambassador, Michelle Yeoh. Other personalities have also promised their support for the campaign.

They have contributed personal statements such as "I drive slowly" or "I don't drive when I'm sober"./ DW
