UN nuclear agency: 60% of Iran's enriched uranium is located in Isfahan

Almost half of Iran's uranium enriched to over 60% purity is stored in a tunnel complex in Isfahan and is likely still there, the head of the UN nuclear agency, Rafael Grossi, said.

This tunnel system is the only target that appears not to have suffered serious damage during the US-Israeli attacks last June, which targeted Iran's nuclear facilities.

Diplomats have long said that Isfahan was used to store uranium enriched to 60 percent. This was confirmed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in a report to member states, without specifying the exact quantity.

According to IAEA estimates, when Israel launched the first strikes in June, Iran had 440.9 kilograms of 60% enriched uranium. If enriched further, this amount could provide material for about 10 nuclear weapons, according to the UN agency's criteria.

The official said there was a little more than 200 kilograms of enriched uranium in Isfahan, but possibly more. According to him, most of the stockpile was there, while some located elsewhere in Iran may have been destroyed. /CNA
