It may seem like a title that at first glance makes you think or laugh, as to how someone could be so mean to themselves as to keep them in prison.
The case of Erion Veliaj is an example.
Someone may object, but "Erion Veliaj" is keeping Erion Veliaj in prison. There is nothing to laugh at here. All the facts say so.
One of the main points that SPAK prosecutors, Ols Dado and Altin Dumani, strongly emphasize whenever Veliaj requests the replacement of the security measure is the fact that he has destroyed evidence.
By remaining in office as mayor, he risks destroying the investigative process.
Erion Veliaj, in addition to the 12 charges he had at the time of his arrest, also received a 13th charge for using illegal items in detention.
But he could be investigated at liberty if he were no longer mayor, if he had resigned and not gone to the institution to destroy evidence.
The case of Klotilda Bushka, who apparently the prosecutors have shown to be generous or lenient, who took and broke Adela Kondakçiu's phone to change evidence, which was also the main source of extracting investigative data for Erion Veliaj after her phone was seized by SPAK for another case, that of the mayor of Himara Jorgo Goro, arrested after Fredi Beleri's report.
Let's look at a simple fact.
If Erion Veliaj were not in office as mayor and did not tamper with the evidence, what would be the main argument of prosecutors Ols Dado and Altin Dumani before the court? Why should they keep him in prison? They could investigate him like many other mayors, while at large.
A person who resigns, like anywhere else in the world, does not destroy evidence and the investigation continues, and in the end it is the court that decides.
Erion Veliaj, summoned in December 2024 for the second time to SPAK but for the first time in connection with the investigations against him and his wife Ajola Xoxa, came out and attacked SPAK at a Municipal Council meeting in a criminal manner.
Not only that, but he also started destroying evidence. After learning about the charges, instead of resigning and letting the prosecutors do their job or taking on the entire burden of this case by freeing the businessmen and his wife, (but he doesn't have that kind of manliness) he went ahead and continued with the charges, emphasizing that he was the mayor, was elected, did a lot of work, while on the other hand he was destroying evidence, was harming the investigation.
Time and again, prosecutors have said this in court. Erion Veliaj, who is free, risks destroying the process and blowing it up because he is in office as mayor, and he did this with his latest act of ass-kicking.
When Edi Rama dismissed him, Erion Veliaj was not heard in the Municipal Council. This was found to be a procedural violation by the Constitutional Court and Erion Veliaj was left in office.
In fact, if Erion Veliaj had not appealed to the Constitutional Court, he would have refuted one of the main arguments of the SPAK prosecutors for which he is in prison.
If he did not appeal Rama's dismissal, he could immediately request the replacement of the security measure.
Erion Veliaj would not be mayor and there would be no judge to keep him in jail. The prosecutors could have many other arguments, but their main pillar is the fact that Erion Veliaj is mayor and is destroying evidence.
This argument would be defeated in court if Erion Veliaj were to resign, as he would no longer be in charge of destroying evidence. That is why Erion Veliaj is the one keeping Erion Veliaj in prison.
Elections would be held in Tirana, a new mayor would be installed, Erion Veliaj would continue the process, would seek to replace the security measure, and would no longer be in office as mayor.
The trial would continue with another security measure without any discussion that there is no court and no reason to keep him in prison if he is not on duty.
Erion Veliaj did not do this, he chose to keep himself in prison as Erion and as mayor for a year.
With less than a year left in his term, with legal procedures, with the court that has now, after 7 months, begun to review the case on its merits, Erion Veliaj will probably leave office when the elections are held and will no longer be mayor.
At this moment, he will probably gain freedom, but no longer as mayor, but as Erion Veliaj. Freedom with another measure of security that he will no longer have the duty of that mayor who can destroy and blow up an entire investigation or judicial process.
It is clear that Erion Veliaj is being held in prison by Erion Veliaj, who is clinging to and tying himself to the mayor's chair. He even sacrifices himself, staying in prison to protect the mayor's chair.
This is Erion Veliaj who, in order to keep the title of mayor of Tirana, leaves Erion in prison, keeping him away from his family and relatives. Apparently, he does not have the perspective of a father, a parent, it is enough for him to be mayor without letting him stay in prison.
While he could have been outside, next to his son, it seems he has chosen to stay in the cell, to keep the mayor's chair./ CNA
