A spy in Washington is helping the Russians, but Ukraine's counterattack will succeed

No one seems to know how the United States would react if China invaded Taiwan. For decades, American leaders did everything they could to avoid this question. Then, in September of last year, President Joe Biden appeared to end Washington's "strategic ambiguity" policy, declaring that US troops would defend the island in the event of "an unprecedented attack".
But almost immediately after Biden's statement, White House officials distanced themselves from it, insisting that there had been no change in US policy towards Taiwan. While the US-Japan Security Treaty of 1960 obligates America to go to war if Japanese territory is attacked, the US has no such treaty with Taiwan.
In case China decided to attack the island, it would have to guess in advance how the US would react. But while strategic ambiguity is intended to serve as a deterrent, the question today is whether it is still enough or not.
Because China is much more powerful today than when it tried to "liberate" Taiwan from Chiang Kai-shek's nationalists by bombing the Kumoi and Matsu islands during the Taiwan Strait crisis of 1958. At that time, the US had signed with Taiwan a mutual defense treaty, and American military leaders pressed to launch a nuclear attack on China.
Today, China has the largest military in the world in terms of personnel, as well as a significant nuclear arsenal. Chinese President Xi Jinping knows that the US cannot risk a nuclear war, so it has not intervened directly in Ukraine, and this encourages him in his plan.
After all, if the US doesn't want to go to war with a much weaker Russia, it certainly won't go to war with China. A political shift in the 2024 US presidential election could bolster China's hopes of taking Taiwan by force.
A Republican president, be it former President Donald Trump, or a like-minded figure, may choose to isolate the US from strife in distant lands. This is a good reason to already establish a clear security commitment to Taiwan.
But is Taiwan really worth defending, even at the risk of engaging in a devastating war? I believe so. After an attack on Taiwan, it would also be an attack on Japan and South Korea. If allowed to dominate the South and East China Seas, China would suffocate the economies of both countries.
If Japan and South Korea lose faith in America's ability or commitment to protect their security, they will either have to submit to Chinese dominance or begin acquiring nuclear weapons, and sooner rather than later. Both options can have disastrous consequences.
