New academic year/ University of Tirana remains the main choice of high school

The University of Tirana continues to remain the main institution of higher education in the country, being this year also the main choice of Albanian high school graduates. In a press conference, the Rector of UT, Prof. Dr. Artan Hoxha, presented the new admission figures, the most sought-after programs and the university's supporting policies, describing the increase in applications as an indicator of the increasing trust that young people have in UT.

Increase in the number of students and programs

Rector Hoxha announced that this year over 11 thousand students are expected in all three study cycles. Out of about 20,200 high school graduates nationwide, 60% have chosen the University of Tirana, while compared to last year there are 160 more students who have preferred this institution.

"This is a clear indication that Albanian students are increasingly seeing their academic future at the University of Tirana. Our programs are consolidated and updated with current developments, guaranteeing quality education and new professional opportunities," emphasized the rector.

The most sought-after programs and challenges

The fields that are showing growth this year are law, economics, social sciences, history and philology. Also, high interest is being observed in natural sciences and information technology, which offer broad employment prospects and applied research.

However, a challenge remains in teaching programs, where interest is lower, reflecting a tendency of graduates to choose other fields more related to the labor market.

Financial support for students

One of the strengths of the University of Tirana is its scholarships and financial facilities. This academic year alone:
??• 2668 students benefit from a monthly scholarship of 10,000 lek,
• students of programs of national interest benefit from scholarships of up to 40,000 lek,
• students of excellence are exempt from fees,
• students with an average grade of 9 pay only half of the study fee.

Registration process and internationalization

The registration process for this year is carried out in two rounds: the first with 7 phases and the second with 5 phases, with the first phase starting tomorrow.

In parallel, the University of Tirana is strengthening its international opening. It is part of 12 European higher education networks and has recently joined an alliance with 8 prestigious European universities, offering over 20 programs in foreign languages ??and double degrees in collaboration with five partner universities.

Teacher training and the challenge of the law on higher education

In response to journalists' questions about the teacher training process, the rector emphasized that UT has taken on the consolidated preparation and continuous training of pre-university education teachers, creating a closer connection between the school and the university.

Regarding the debate on amending the law on higher education, Hoxha stated that it is not time for a new law, but for a review of it after a thorough analysis: "Laws should not be repealed, but improved. The law on higher education has shown that it has stood the test of time and has responded to the purpose for which it was adopted, but after 10 years of implementation, the time has come for amendments to respond to the new reality of education and the developments that Albania has experienced." /CNA
