Shkodra facing the past/ Symposium on border victims and missing persons during

The Files Authority, in collaboration with the "Luigj Gurakuqi" University of Shkodra, organized today, within the framework of August 30 - International Day of Missing Persons, the symposium on the topic "The Border of Hope and Death, 1944–1991. Shkodra facing the past."

The event was attended by the Speaker of the Parliament, Elisa Spiropali, the EU Ambassador, Silvio Gonzato, and the OSCE Ambassador, who emphasized the importance of confronting the past and the necessity of transitional justice. Also present were MP Greta Bardeli, representatives of public institutions, religious communities, families of victims and survivors.

In her speech, Spiropali emphasized that the search for justice is not revenge, but the restoration of denied dignity: “Democracy is not fulfilled without the recognition of victims and the punishment of crimes.” While Ambassador Gonzato underlined that Shkodra must return to a city of memory with museums and memorials, adding that compensation for the former persecuted cannot be postponed indefinitely.

The Head of the Files Authority, Gentiana Sula, acknowledged delays in the excavation process for the recovery of the bodies, stressing that only the return of the missing to their families will bring peace and historical justice. The Rector of the University, Tonin Gjuraj, underlined the role of scientific research and university education in turning memory into part of the national consciousness. /CNA
