The outgoing EU ambassador, Luigi Soreca, spoke this Wednesday about the issue of the IPARD II program, the funds for which were suspended by the European Commission, following suspicions of corruption.

Soreca said that the Albanian authorities should take this matter very seriously, since it is about EU taxpayers' money.

He stated in an interview for the Voice of America that the authorities have been asked to take measures by the end of the year and then the EC will evaluate what the next steps will be.

"You know that the European Commission has received a report from OLAF, evaluated it and then transmitted its request to the Albanian authorities, asking them to take measures by the end of the year. On this basis, the European Commission will assess what the next steps will be. However, in the meantime, to protect the financial interests of the European Union, as you know, the payment of IPARD II and the recommendation for IPARD III have been discontinued.

Why? Because we are talking about EU taxpayers' money, that's why we want this issue to be taken very seriously. We therefore expect the Albanian government to act very seriously to address the Commission's request, so that if this request is met, we can restart this very important program that has produced concrete benefits for Albanian citizens and help one of the most important areas of Albania's economy: agriculture.

We know how important it is, so the ultimate goal is to solve this problem in a way that meets the Commission's request and restarts the program for the benefit of Albanian agriculture", underlined the outgoing EU ambassador./ CNA
