"A political thriller"/ The Greek media talk about the election of
Fredi Beleri and Kyriakos Mitsotakis

The colleague of the Greek Prime Minister, a week ago, called the son of Fredi Beleri, the elected mayor of Himara, who is currently in prison, about his father's candidacy, on the European ticket of "New Democracy".

According to an article by the well-known Greek media Protothema, this action was precisely the end of a thriller that had been developing for weeks, with several transitions and conflicts within the Greek government.

"In the end, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, weighing all the facts, decided that Beleris's candidacy has both symbolic and substantive importance.

Mitsotakis has emphasized that it is symbolic, since according to him this shows that the ethnic minority of Albania is essential, and Fredi Beleri is a strong name, which rings in the backbone of the "New Democracy" and the right-wing audience in Greece.

The scene that unfolded last Monday at the Athens Conservatory was, after all, telling.

When Fredi Beller's name was nominated, everyone rose to their feet, with a huge ovation, when the European "blue" vote was announced.

At the same time, in Himara they were calling his name rhythmically, while the other candidate Pirro Dhima, "the lion of Himara", as he is called, addressing Beler's son said: "Daddy will be happy."

Before we get to Mitsotakis' decision, the background has been a bit of a thriller. Twice Beleri's son was at Megaros Maximos during this period of consultation, which began when Mr. Beleri's name was left on the table. The first was a few weeks ago, when together with Fred's brother, Leonardo Beleris, Petro Beleris met with government representative Pavlos Marinakis.

His second appearance at the government seat was last Saturday, when he met with the trio Maki Voridis-Pavlos Marinakis-Thanasis Nezis. All three were supporters of Beler's candidacy.

The path from the first date to the second, however, was not linear. In the first phase, the prospect of Beleris' candidacy was treated positively and seemed "closed".

About the "New Democracy" congress, what was being said, even by associates of the prime minister, was that his candidacy would add momentum and answer the concerns of traditional and right-wing voters.

After a few days, towards the end of last week, the mood returned, with the candidacy of Beler.

Of course, the Maksimos Palace reports that information about Beler's "candidacy" has never been allowed to come out, while they add that Mitsotakis had not made a final decision until last Sunday."/ CNA
