Germany continues to seek qualified foreign professionals, especially during the tourist season.

According to  Studying-in-Germany , the amount required for financial proof for students in Germany will increase starting from September 2024.

Students from outside the EU or EEA (including students from Albania, in this case) who plan to stay in Germany for their studies must prove to the German authorities that they have enough money to support themselves to get a visa. This specified amount must be deposited in a bank account called Blocked Account.

This money is then blocked and released in monthly installments to the account holder, proving that the student has sufficient funds to support himself during his stay in Germany.

As of January 2023, the required amount in the blocked account when applying for a German student visa was €11,208 (€934/month). From September 2024, this amount is expected to rise to €11,904 per 12 months, or €992 per month.

This request is based on the BAföG norm, the financial aid program for students in Germany. This deposit is the minimum you need to have in your blocked account to demonstrate financial means (Finanzierungsnachweis) for a student visa.

Why it's important: "The new financial point will probably make it more challenging for students from non-EU countries to study in Germany. Some students may struggle to meet the increased financial requirements, potentially leading to a drop in applications from these countries. However, those who manage to meet the limit can be financially secure and better prepared for the costs of living in Germany." - Alma Miftari, Head of Research at Studying-in-Germany.org.

Students and job seekers who need a visa to Germany need a blocked bank account. Even students from countries that do not require a visa to Germany (such as the USA, Canada, Japan, etc.) will need a blocked bank account for their residence permit.

For those who do not need a visa or residence permit to study in Germany (eg, citizens of an EU/EEA member state), a blocked account is not necessary.

Studying in Germany without a blocked account is possible if one can prove to the German authorities that they have sufficient funds through several other alternatives.
