Over 5,000 victims of floods in Libya/ Begaj, message of condolence

The President of Albania, Barjam Begaj, has conveyed a message of condolence to all the families of the victims in Libya, caused by the floods as a result of the storm Daniel, which also flooded the neighboring country of Greece.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Libya during this difficult time. I express my heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost loved ones due to the devastating impact of storm Daniel in eastern Libya," writes Begaj on Twitter.

More than 5,000 people are presumed dead and 10,000 others missing after heavy rains in northeastern Libya caused two dams to collapse, adding more water to already flooded areas.

"In the eastern city of Derna, which is the most affected by the floods, about 6,000 people remain missing," Othman Abduljalil, health minister in Libya's eastern administration, told Libya's Almasar TV. He called the situation "catastrophic" when he visited the city on Monday.

"Hospitals in Derna are no longer operable and morgues are full," said Osama Aly, spokesman for the emergency and ambulance service.

"Dead bodies are left outside the morgues on the sidewalks," he told CNN./CNA
