10 thousand disappeared from the catastrophic floods in Libya

At least 10,000 people are missing after a powerful storm caused devastating flooding in northeastern Libya, according to an official from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). 

Authorities estimate around 1,000 people have died in the eastern port city of Derna alone, warning that the death toll could rise.

Rescuers have begun pulling hundreds of bodies from the rubble after heavy rain over the weekend caused dams to break, washing away entire districts.

"The death toll is high and could reach thousands," Tamer Ramadan, head of the IRFC delegation in Libya, told reporters.

"We can confirm from our independent sources of information that the number of missing persons has reached 10,000 people so far," he added.

EU promises help

The European Union's foreign affairs chief, Josep Borrell, said they were following the situation closely and were ready to offer support. 

"Saddened by the images of destruction in Libya, devastated by extreme weather conditions causing the tragic loss of so many lives," Borrell wrote on X, the media platform formerly known as Twitter./ CNA
