The government spends from our taxes about 785 euros per year per student for educational services in the 9-year cycle.

The cost per student at all levels of study in public education is calculated by the Ministry of Education in the allocation of funds according to programs.

According to official data, there are about 260,000 students in 9-year education this school year.

Only for the teaching service, about 22 billion ALL has been determined in the budget, which mainly represents teachers' salaries. The expenses per student during a school year are calculated at 82,425 ALL or about 785 euros.

In secondary education, the cost is somewhat higher. Public expenses for a student during a school year in high school are calculated as 104,020 lek by the Ministry of Education or about 990 euros.

In public higher education, at the first level, the teaching service for one student is 1326 euros.

Costs per student in public education are expected to increase in the coming years due to the decrease in the number of students and the increase in teacher salaries.

The real costs are even higher, as some of them are covered by parents, such as transport costs, school supplies including tools and books are borne by parents.

This school year 2023-2024, in all pre-university education institutions, about 29 thousand students sat in school benches for the first time. The number is the same compared to a year ago after the Ministry of Education changed the criteria for registration in first grade.

This school year, all children who turn 6 years old by December could be registered, while until last year only those who turned 6 years old by the start of the school year could be registered.

In the 10th grade, about 27,000 students started the 2023-2024 academic year from about 28,000 last year. The biggest decrease in this age group, among others, comes from the high emigration of young minors.

The pre-university education system is being severely affected by high immigration flows at young ages.

The number of children who started first grade this year is 2.6 times lower than in the first years of the transition in 1994-1995, where about 77 thousand students were enrolled in first grade per year./ Monitor Magazine
