The Greek government warns citizens: Do not consume tap water

Flooding in humid areas of Greece has also caused problems with drinking water.

Citizens in the affected areas should not consume contaminated water and all stagnant water should be treated as potentially contaminated, Deputy Minister of Health Irini Agapidaki stressed during the conference held on Sunday.

Agapidaki stressed that citizens should use bottled water for all kinds of work, for their personal hygiene, to drink water, to cook, and possibly for the work they have to do inside the house.

It is equally important to avoid contact with contaminated water, mud, not to allow animals to play in the mud or drink water from it.

Citizens who find dead animals from floods in different areas, it is important to notify the District, municipalities, competent services, to collect the animals immediately and to proceed with the cremation and burial procedures. 

The Reference Center, Public Health Laboratory of the School of Medicine of the University of Thessaly, has already installed an epidemiological surveillance system for the detection of outbreaks such as gastroenteritis or other infectious diseases due to stagnant water.

At the moment the situation is under control. But it is important for citizens to consume bottled water, safe, sealed food, to be especially careful with food and water, not to have come into contact with mud, if the packaging is cracked or partially damaged, throw it away this food and water and not to use them in relation to mosquitoes./ CNA
