1940 - An extraordinary collection of prehistoric paintings is discovered in the Lascaux cave in France

83 years ago near Montinjak, France, 4 teenagers accidentally discovered a rare collection of prehistoric paintings in a cave. The 15,000-17,000-year-old murals, mostly composed of animal images, are among the best examples of Upper Paleolithic art.

Originally studied by French archaeologist Henri Broil, Lasko Cave consists of a main tunnel 66 meters long and 16 meters high. The walls of the cave are decorated with about 600 painted animals and symbols, drawn in about 1500 carvings.

The murals depict in exquisite detail many types of animals, including horses, red deer, deer, cows, cats and what appear to be mythical creatures. There is only one human figure in the cave: a man with a bird's head. Archaeologists believe that the cave was used for a long period of time as a center for hunting and religious rites.

The Lasko Cave was opened to the public in 1948, but closed in 1963, after artificial lights had faded the vivid colors of the paintings, and algae had grown on some of them. An exhibition of replicas of the Lasko cave murals opened nearby in 1983, and is visited by tens of thousands of people every year.
