Does Veliaj's release leave Albania outside the EU?!

Edi Rama is demanding the release of Erion Veliaj, the mayor of Tirana, who was reinstated after a decision by the Constitutional Court.

In fact, the dismissal was made by Prime Minister Rama himself, by the Socialist Party advisors in the municipality. A decision that was overturned by the Constitutional Court and declared illegal.

On the other hand, immediately after this decision, the Prime Minister requested that Erion Veliaj be reinstated because Tirana cannot be held hostage and is in trouble. There is no question that Tirana is in trouble and should not be held hostage, but Erion Veliaj is a person with 13 serious criminal charges, which have been forwarded by SPAK to the GJKKO and is currently being investigated for another criminal file.

Erion Veliaj is not in prison by chance, nor has any of his rights been violated. Erion Veliaj is in prison because he was tampering with evidence.

And the request to release the accused who is not yet going to court, has not been submitted for months, it only postpones the trial. To ask to release this man, who has destroyed evidence, while he also has a second criminal file, is to trample on justice, is to throw in the trash all the investigations carried out by SPAK prosecutors and, indisputably, the complete reform of the justice system and the institution as a whole.

The EU is clear, the institution with the greatest trust in Albania is SPAK, an institution supported and financed by European partners.

But, these partners, the EU, monitoring day after day and seeing what is happening, how the prime minister is openly intervening, saying that he had not achieved justice, that he had dismissed Erioni, are returning the members of the Constitutional Court, while the majority of the members are elected with his blessing, without talking about the fact that one of the members of the Constitutional Court, Marsida Xhaferllari, should have been excluded from the judicial body at the request of the government, a request that the government in fact never made, shows that it is the opposite of what the prime minister says.

The Constitutional Court is seized, a precedent has been found, a way, a form to release Erion Veliaj and return him to duty.

So, a man with 13 serious criminal charges, with at least 9 for corruption, should go back to office because Tirana chose him.

Yes, he may have chosen Tirana, but he was caught breaking the law, committing serious criminal offenses, and the Constitutional Court cannot release a man from prison with 13 such charges. No circumstances, no facts, no evidence have been brought, moreover, the case has been taken to court.

Therefore, international partners, the EU, the institutions that monitor and see what is happening with the reform, clearly if Erion Veliaj is released with political schemes and scenarios, they could erect a great wall for Albania towards the EU.

The hope that Edi Rama has that he can bring Albania into the EU in 2029 or 2030 can be stopped simply because Prime Minister Rama wants to release from prison his accomplice, Erion Veliaj, who was caught in a crime, in 13 serious criminal offenses./ CNA
