For almost 48 hours, the Librazhd-Prrenjas national road has been blocked. According to the ARRSH, a landslide occurred in the supporting part of a bridge, which in fact appears to have not been a bridge with foundations, but one cast in place, a bridge built about 25 years ago.
Works are being carried out on the Elbasan-Qafë Thanë national road, which has been divided into several lots. One of the segments where work is being done is the part of the bridge that has cracked. According to the ARA, it is in danger of collapsing. Initially, vehicles and pedestrians were allowed, then both pedestrians and vehicles were banned.
In the footage obtained by CNA today at the site of the landslide, work is underway at a rapid pace to provide a bypass. But this bypass is being built after the disaster occurred, after the bridge collapsed and after the entire southeast of the country was blocked.
Two of the main border crossing points, Albania's main trade hubs with the region, such as Qafë Thana and Kapshtica, which connect the part of Macedonia, Bulgaria, Turkey and Greece in trade with Albania, have been blocked. The bypass should have actually been built or made ready before this situation was addressed.
The company that is building it is "ANK", owned by former socialist MP Ndue Kola. It is the trucks of this company, it is the vehicles of this entity that have been working on this part where the road collapsed.
The upper part where the new road is being built seems to be in order, but you can't build a new road while blocking and imprisoning the southeast of the country with hundreds of thousands of residents, inflicting a catastrophic economic cost on them simply and solely due to irresponsibility or carelessness.
When a new road is built, the entity that builds the road also takes responsibility for the existing road. How can the southeast be left blocked? What has happened is an extreme case. And here the ARA is not the only one responsible because they can take the gun and shoot them, that solution is simpler.
But the truth is that the southeast, its businesses, hundreds of thousands of residents will be economically damaged and have a huge financial cost. Who will pay for it? Who will pay for the thousands of canceled reservations in Korça, in the southeast, in Voskopoja or in Dardë? From Elbasan, from Fier, from Vlora, from Tirana, from Shkodra, from everywhere, endless cancellations, empty hostels.
Who will pay the costs of goods that do not circulate, of trade that does not develop? Who will pay the costs of double the goods and consumption that goes to the cities of Korça, Pogradec, Kolonja or Bilisht?
Who will pay the increased costs of products leaving Korça and going to Tirana or the increased costs of hundreds of millions of lek of goods being transported from customs points to the center of Albania?
Will anyone be held accountable? Who should supervise the road? The old road has been handed over to the company that is building the new road. Its engineers or supervisors cannot look up at the sky and say "this is what happened now". Whose vehicles passed through there? Didn't this company's vehicles pass through? Was this company's vehicles not working? Someone must be held accountable for what happened.
Blocking the southeast does not only have a daily cost, but it also has a cost that runs into hundreds of millions of euros in damage to businesses, tourism, trade, industry, everything that the southeast of the country has, up to the border crossing points and the taxes that the state collects from these customs points. /CNA
