The outgoing EU ambassador, Luigi Soreca, has sided with Albania for the EU membership process.

Soreca said in an interview for the Voice of America that Albania has made progress and the time has come for this opportunity not to be lost.

"Albania had a very positive year 2023, the screening process was successful. The European Commission is ready to move forward. So Albania has made progress from this point of view. But now is the time not to miss this opportunity. In these four years, Albania must accelerate the pace of reforms. So strong political leadership, discipline and professionalism throughout the public administration would be very important. We hope that at the end of this period, Albania will be in such a position, together with the other six countries, to reap the benefits of this important effort from the EU", said the diplomat.

The EU ambassador also commented on the recommendations of the European Commission to start the talks on the first group of chapters with Albania at the end of the year, while emphasizing that the work done so far by Albania should be rewarded.

"I think it is important to say here that the Report on Albania issued by the Commission has clearly identified the objective of opening the first grouping with Albania by the end of the year, the so-called basic chapters, 23 and 24. This is the objective for which The European Commission is working with Member States.

As you also said, and rightly so, because this is the rule of the house, it is up to the member states in the Council to decide. Discussions are being held, different positions are being evaluated. I think it's important now to keep the end goal in mind, to make sure that the work done so far will pay off.

For specific issues, I will not go into detail, of course, but our hope is to find a quick solution, fully respecting the rule of law", underlined Soreca./ CNA
