70 years since the closing of Ellis Island / Photos reflecting immigration

70 years ago, Ellis Island closed its doors.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe passed through Ellis Island to enter the United States.

More than 12 million immigrants passed through this island from its opening in 1892 to its closure in 1954.

The name derives from Samuel Ellis, a Welshman who bought the island in 1774.

The first inspection station opened in 1892 and was destroyed by fire in 1897. The second station opened in 1900 and provided facilities for medical quarantine and immigrant processing.

After 1924, Ellis Island was used primarily as a detention center for immigrants. During World War I and World War II, its facilities were also used by the US military to detain prisoners of war.

A few years after the immigration station was closed the buildings were partially reopened in 1976. The main building and adjacent structures were renovated and turned into a museum in 1990.

Augustus Sherman, chief census clerk at Ellis Island and an amateur photographer, captured the diverse cultures of the immigrants who arrived from 1904 to 1924.

His photos offer a unique perspective on the immigration experience during this period./ CNA
