Ronaldo meets with Trump at the White House today

The President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, will host Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo at the White House today.

The meeting comes just months before the start of the World Cup, which will be held this summer in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Meanwhile, Portugal is said to have scheduled a friendly match against the United States men's national team in March.

Ronaldo's desire to meet the American leader was revealed during an interview with British journalist Piers Morgan. Trump has a long-standing friendship with Morgan, dating back to the time the presenter won the 2008 reality show "Celebrity Apprentice," hosted by the US president.

In this interview, Morgan asked about a signed jersey that Ronaldo had sent to Trump, which bore the message "President Donald J. Trump plays for peace."

"If the world is at peace, that's our goal. He's one of the people who can change it or help change the world. And that's my main goal: to meet with Trump and talk about world peace. If you can make it happen, he's someone I would really like to sit down and talk to," Ronaldo replied to the question.

The Portuguese striker also expressed his willingness to welcome Trump to Saudi Arabia if necessary, but instead said he would like to visit him in the US.

"Here (in Saudi Arabia), in the United States, wherever it happens, I would like to meet him. I know he was in Saudi Arabia. I hope to sit down with him one day, because he is one of those people that I really admire. I think he can make things happen and I respect people like that ," the 40-year-old superstar concluded.

According to US media, Ronaldo is expected to arrive at the White House on the same day that Trump will also meet with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman. It remains unclear whether the two meetings are related, given Cristiano's relationship with Al Nasr, the Arab team he currently plays for. /CNA
