Study: Exposure to air pollution linked to dementia

A study that examined data from 56 million people finds that exposure to air pollution increases the risk of a specific form of dementia.

As researchers report in the journal Science, PM2.5 particles, i.e. particles smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter, are linked to "Lewy body disease," the third most common form of dementia after Alzheimer's and vascular dementia.

Exposure to PM2.5 does not necessarily cause Lewy body disease, but it accelerates its onset in people with a genetic predisposition, Hui Chen of the University of Technology Sydney, who was not involved in the analysis, told Nature.

The study adds to recent recognition of air pollution as a risk factor for dementia.

According to a study published in June in The Lancet Planetary Health, every 10 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m³) increase in PM2.5 concentration increases the risk of dementia by 17%. As the researchers noted, 10 μg/m³ was the average concentration of PM2.5 on the streets of central London in 2023. /CNA
