Skipping breakfast increases risk of bone fracture

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and a new study says that's absolutely true when it comes to bone health.

People who skip breakfast have a greater risk of bone fractures from osteoporosis, researchers reported August 28 in the Journal of the Endocrine Society.

"We found that skipping breakfast and eating late dinners was associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis," said lead researcher Dr. Hiroki Nakajima of Nara Medical University in Japan.

"Furthermore, these unhealthy eating habits were found to be associated with the accumulation of other lifestyle risk factors, such as lack of physical activity, smoking, and insufficient sleep," Nakajima added in a press release.

For the study, researchers analyzed health claims and medical checkup data from more than 927,000 people in Japan aged 20 and older.

The team looked for links between lifestyle and people's risk of fracture of the pelvis, arm or leg due to osteoporosis.

The results showed that skipping breakfast increased a person's risk of bone fractures from osteoporosis by 18%, smoking by 11% and eating dinner late by 8%.

If a person skips breakfast and eats dinner late, the risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures increases by 23%, researchers found.

Other unhealthy habits that increased the risk of bone fractures included daily alcohol consumption, lack of exercise and poor sleep, the researchers said.

"These results suggest that preventing osteoporosis and fractures requires not only healthy eating habits, but also a broader effort to improve overall lifestyle behaviors," Nakajima said.

People who skipped breakfast tended to have lower intakes of vitamin D and calcium, indicating that nutritional deficiencies may contribute to osteoporosis risk, the researchers wrote.

“These results suggest that osteoporosis is a lifestyle-related disease,” the researchers concluded. “Future research is needed to investigate the relationship between late dinners and bone metabolism, as well as intervention studies that focus on guidelines regarding skipping breakfast and eating late dinners.”/ CNA
